Probably the strongest class, with a balancing factor of being difficult to learn. The warlock is an evil SOB, and specializes in destroying enemies as quickly as possible and with as much malice as can be brought to bear. Often they use overkill, and most warlock player seem to take a perverse delight in doing so. I like to play warlocks, because I am an evil SOB.
Like the hunter, the warlock has pets and can increase their power. Like the mage he can deal a lot of damage directly with spells. The warlock is excellent as crowd control, and is more sturdy than the mage. As a combat oriented class the only role he can’t play is tank, and with the right spec and pets that role can be filled as well.
The warlocks strongest point is debuffs. Using the affliction abilities you can turn even the most powerful opposition into weaklings. Using a combination of their direct damage spells, or pet buffing abilities and affliction, you can take out just about anyone.
Before WotLK the warlock was the king of WoW. They were justifiably taken down a few notches, and are more balance now. Make no mistake a properly played warlock can still whoop up on anyone, but the learning curve for the warlock is rather steep. I would not recommend the warlock for a new player. Take a mage, hunter or a shadow priest for a spin first to get a feel for the game, then take on a warlock.
