This guide will once and for all explain how to successfully run Heroic World of Warcraft instances successfully with PuGs, or pick-up-groups (that is to say, groups of random people).

First of all though, I’ll give you a little background on what I’ve done myself. I have a druid tank, and I have tanked all heroics in the game with him (including Heroic Arcatraz, Heroic Shattered Halls, and Heroic Shadow Labyrinth). I also have a level 70 priest healer, and I have healed most of the heroic instances in the game on him as well, though not all of them. All of course using pick-up-groups only.

Wondering how yet? It’s really, really simple. I’m going to let you in on the secret, but not quite yet. Before that, let me go over some of the simple problems people usually encounter in PuGs, and how I would resolve them.

Often times when you’re running a PuG, someone in the group will idle out away from the keyboard and you’ll be stuck there 4-manning it. Many people get confused and don’t know what to do when that happens. Do we continue going on with 4 people and just leave him here? Do we stand here and wait for him? Do we use this as an opportunity to go to the bathroom and all go AFK?

None of those answers are correct. In this case, you give the sneaky Gnome Mage in your party a limited invisibility potion (being the deft and always prepared alchemist that you are – right?). You then direct him to sneak to the next boss, and… well, you know the rest. Soon enough your AFK friend will have a nice repair bill, and the rest of you will be safely out of the instance. Wait, you did zone out first, right?

Another common problem that people have is not being able to find others in the whole World of Warcraft to fill up their PuGs. Admittedly, sometimes it can be very difficult to find a good tank or a good healer. That is why I highly recommend that if you want to play the game with Instances in mind, you roll a healer or tank, gear it out and learn how to play it well. If not though, it is still possible to find people for your group.

First of all, make use of your friends list. When you run with a tank, healer or DPS who stand out as being good, add them to your friends list and make a note of what they do. That way, when you’re looking to fill spots for your group next time you can simply look at your friends list.

The other suggestion that I have for you is to be persistent. Make a macro using proper English (punctuation!) recruiting for your PuG. Make it seem like an exciting or unique opportunity. Make your message stand out! That being said, don’t spam it. I will usually stand in Stormwind, Orgrimmar or another major city and post in Trade and the Looking For Group channel once every minute or two at most.

That’s about all for this World of Warcraft Instance guide. Wait, I said that I’d share the secret to successfully pugging Heroic Instances, didn’t I?

Well, here it is. Lead the group yourself. Start up the group, and lead it. However before you do that, look it all up online. Read about the bosses. Beyond that, read about the trash. Understand what you will need in your group, and form your group around it. If there is a boss that fears a lot, it might help to have a Priest or Shaman in the party for Fear Ward/Tremor Totem, for example. If need be, then improvise with a strange party composition (I’ve run Heroic Shattered Halls with 4 Druids before!).

Mark the mobs for each pull, and make sure crowd control like polymorph and sap go off like they should. Organize the party, and make sure that everyone knows what they are supposed to be doing at every point during every fight. Be prepared to type a lot because chances are you won’t be using vent when you PuG Heroic Instances, though I have randomly ended up on vent for a few. Beyond all, if someone in the group is dragging the party down, like that Huntard who just seems to standing in the back spamming Auto-Shot. He doesn’t deserve any loot that he’d get here anyway, even if it’s just badges.

Now there you have it, the secret to successfully pugging Heroic Instances in the World of Warcraft. Don’t just sit there now, go do it!
