In today’s internet society we will find a lot of internet scams. I suspect the global financial crisis will bring a lot more scammers to the internet; and they will keep finding new ways to gain your trust and your money. You should always use caution while using internet as a media. It’s really easy to be caught by these scams. Especially those who manipulate your emotional life to gain your trust and money. There is something to be cautious with all information you give away.
The most typical fraud we meet is the well known Nigerian scammers who offer us great business opportunities on behalf of some rich deceased people. Often the people they use in their emails are real life characters. I remember I got angry they used the Norwegian mountain climber and business Arne Næss Jr in their frauds (for those who haven’t heard of Arne Næss Jr; he was nephew of the well known philosopher Arne Næss, Jr was also married to Diana Ross). Anyway; their deal will most times give you million of dollars; sometimes they also uses lotteries you never entered as opportunity to give you money. During the process there will be “unexpected” expenses. You as the victim are the one who has to pay these scammers for these scammers; and you will never see any of the millions they promised. There is something to old saying “if it’s too good to be true… it’s not true”.
Another typical scam is phishing. Phishing is often pretending to be real email from important places such as PayPal, Citibank etc. They will ask you to verify your account, or to change your password. These emails seem to be real; and many believe they are real. However; they aren’t. They are also providing you with a link to where you can verify your username and password; or change it. These sites you are directed to also seem to be the real PayPal or Citibank site. However; they aren’t. They are simply created to get your username and password so these scammers might use it to take your money. If you get such an email; and you are in doubt, you should enter the URL manually to your browser. Yes, it take some extra second to enter the URL manually, but who cares? You will at least be a bit safer.
The last type of scams I want to mention is the famous dating sites. Sadly the scammers are using these to their advantage as well. They will gain your trust, and your love and use it for all its worth. They will maybe ask to send money for someone ill in their family. Or even ask to send money for a flight for you to meet. But if they are scammers they will never come, and your money will be lost. You might think to go to their place might be smart; but in reality it’s even more dangerous as they can in worst cases beat you up, or even kill you to get your money. So please use caution and be skeptical when using these pages.
There is a lot to be said on scammers, and I will continue to write about them on my blog fraud warnings I hope this helped some people warn people of the potential dangers of scammers out there.
